Kanji are Chinese logographic characters which were introduced to Japan in the 5th century. It is one of three scripts used in Japanese writing. There are approximately 2,000 kanji characters which are taught in school and used on a daily basis, but there are thousands more. Each character has its own meaning and corresponds to a word. By combining characters, more words are created.
